 DESTINATION - Malaysia

Throughout the year temperatures vary from between 20 - 30°C. It is very warm and humid in the days, but temperatures drop in the evenings. The main rainy season in the east runs between November and February, while August is the wettest period on the west coast.

Located in central South-East Asia, Malaysia shares a border with Thailand in the north, with Singapore to the south and Indonesia to the south and west. Peninsular Malaysia, particularly the northern region, has some of the world’s most ancient rainforests. The mountains on the eastern side of the country are steep where they meet a sandy coastline which is home to many coral reefs. The west coast is a long fertile plain and consists of mangrove swamps and mudflats which separate into many different bays. In the west, the plains have been cleared and cultivated, while the east coast is has beaches and dense jungle

 HOW IT WORKS

Planning and Preparation

With the support of World Challenge and our teachers, me and my fellow 'challengers' plan and prepare for the expedition by:

  • Planning our itinerary together.

  • Raising expedition funds.

  • Getting fit with the World Challenge Fitness programme.

  • Developing practical skills on a Training Expedition in October.

Team Malaysia

I will be travelling with 17 other students from my school, similar age to me and 2 other teachers meaning our team will consist of 20 'challengers'

 PHASES OF THE EXPEDITION

Acclimatisation Phase

We will find our feet by getting used to the new culture and climate.

Trekking Phase

We will trek through the jungle, learn jungle survival skills and camp out.

Community Project Phase

We will have the opportunity to help the local community, get to know their way of life and show them our culture too!

Rest & Relaxation Phase

We will unwind and enjoy cultural and adventure activities with the rest of the team.

Acclimatisation may consist of changing money, contacting our in-country agent, confirm booking and buy supplies

There are several different types of trekking e.g. jungle treks, river rides, horseback treks.

We can do either a community project e.g. renovating school facilities, establishing a clean water supply, designing playgrounds, planting vegetable gardens or a conservation project e.g. working alongside rangers to build camps to launch anti-poaching patrols, turtle egg beach patrols, tree planting and reforestation, monitoring marine wildlife populations.

You can go white water rafting, scuba diving, visit some ancient ruins and exploring the city.
